The Challenge

The RSPCA is one of Australia's most recognised charities. Behind the brand, however, sat a federation of eight independent state and territory organisations, each with its own leadership team, board, strategy, purpose, vision and values.

While united by a commitment to animal welfare, the RSPCA's state and territory organisations operated with different strategies, priorities and ways of working, resulting in inconsistency, duplication and a weakened national brand.

The challenge was to build consensus on a single National Brand Strategy to unite eight independent organisations under one common direction.

The Insight

I discovered that the RSPCA was positioned primarily through the lens of cruelty prevention. While this work remains critically important, it represents only part of the organisation's contribution to society.

I also discovered that community attitudes towards animals had evolved significantly. Animals were increasingly being recognised as sentient beings that enrich our lives and deserve dignity, respect and compassion.

This created the opportunity for a more positive, expansive and future-focused role for the RSPCA. One that reflected changing community expectations, embraced the animal-human connection, and captured the full breadth of the RSPCA's contribution to animal welfare.

The Solution

I developed a National Brand Strategy that aligned eight independent organisations around a shared Purpose, Vision, Mission and Values framework.

At the heart of the strategy was a fundamental redefinition of the RSPCA's role in society. For more than a century, the organisation had largely been defined by the prevention of cruelty. The new framework expanded that role, positioning the RSPCA as an organisation that exists to help animals live better lives and to strengthen the relationship between animals and people.

The resulting Purpose, Vision, Mission and Values provided the RSPCA with a positive, contemporary, future-focused framework for communication, fundraising, advocacy and decision-making. While remaining true to its heritage and commitment to animal welfare.

The Impact

For the first time, eight independent state and territory organisations agreed to a single national strategic platform, providing a common foundation for communication, fundraising, advocacy and decision-making.

The RSPCA gained a clearer and more contemporary way of defining its role in society while remaining true to its heritage and commitment to animal welfare.

The framework created greater alignment, consistency and collaboration across the federation, enabling the organisation to speak with a stronger and more unified national voice.
